MOVIE AND MUSIC REVIEWS

REVIEWS

The Bucket List

The Bucket List is an ambitious movie...with megastars like Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, this movie clearly aims at being a critical and commercial hit. But it doesn't strike a chord. Two Cancer patients (with Jack being the rich bloke) befriend each other in their final days and have fun. Now, the plot isn't new but it is good. The story is a sensitive one, but the screenplay isn't impressive. Also, Nicholson and Freeman don't deliver their best in this movie. It is a watchable film but not a memorable one.

2.5/5

There will be Blood

Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of 'Oil' is perhaps one of the best adaptations I've seen in many years. With an impressive screenplay and camera work, this movie stands tall. With flawless Art Direction to marvelous Cinematography, it deserved all the Oscar nominations it was nominated in. Also, Daniel Day Lewis' portrayal of a greedy oil trader will be remembered as one of the best Academy Award winning performances of all times.

4/5

Discipline- Janet Jackson (album)

Discipline is Janet's first album since her disastrous 2006 album (what's the name?). Compared to her previous album, it doesn't disappoint. The tracks sound fresh and are much better. But it isn't her greatest album. Some songs can be dull but some are great foot-tapping numbers. It topped the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for a week, but it isn't her best.

Hi. This is me again….This week I’ll give you my analysis of the Oscars- the Academy Awards. The Oscars have always been special- controversial, grand and even most watched!! So, here is my take on this year’s Oscars

Best Picture

It was quite difficult. With ‘Atonement’ winning every ‘Best Picture’ at other award shows, it was the clear frontrunner. However, when the movie wasn’t nominated for Best Director, it was almost clear that the Academy wasn’t keen to award this film. Gone are the days when ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ won the Best Picture without being nominated for Best Director. ‘No Country for Old Men’ is a great film. But not the greatest Best Picture. Some other movies could’ve been nominated like American Gangster or Charlie Wilson’s War. I was betting for ‘Juno’ a soft comedy with a very deep meaning. However, I am happy for the Coen Bros.

Winner- No Country for Old Men

Deserves- Juno

Best Director

The Coens deserved this one, without a doubt. Everything was perfect- from the acting to camera work. Watch out people, the Coens have arrived.

Winner- Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men

Deserves- Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men

Best Actor

Daniel Day-Lewis, Daniel Day-Lewis and Daniel Day-Lewis!! His performance has been the greatest performance by an actor this year. He was the USP of ‘There will be Blood’. My second choice would’ve been Viggo Mortensen. His transformation has been great- from Aragorn in ‘Lord of The Rings’ to Nikolai Luzhin in ‘Eastern Promises’. However, Lewis eclipsed everyone. His performance of a greedy oil businessman is his greatest till date.

Winner- Daniel Day-Lewis, There will be Blood

Deserves- Daniel Day-Lewis, There will be Blood

Best Actress

This was quite surprising. I thought Julie Christie was the clear winner in this one. However, the Academy decided to award Marion Cotillard for her portrayal as Edith Piaf in ‘la Vie en Rose’. To be honest, the role was easy. Anyone could’ve done it- well , not everyone . But Julie Christie’s performance was better. I would’ve have accepted Ellen Page as Best Actress in ‘Juno’. But Cotillard didn’t deserve.

Winner- Marion Cotillard, La Vie En Rose

Deserves- Julie Christie, Away from Her

Reviewing the Grammy Awards!!!

The Grammy Awards....the Oscars of the music industry. Here is my take on 6 awards given this year.

Album of the Year

Herbie Hancock became the first Jazz artist to win this grand prize in 43 years. A true legend, no doubt...a multiple Grammy winner, an Oscar awardee, his win was a big surprise.......I mean, people backed Amy Winehouse and Kanye West (and some even favored the Foo Fighters). But this is a great album. Not the best album this year , yet a good one. I personally wanted Kanye to win. His album had everything- collaborations, rap solos, deep lyrics and a cool artwork! However, some great albums weren't nominated- Daughtry, High School Musical 2 etc

winner- River:The Joni Letters by Herbie Hancock
should've won- Graduation by Kanye West

Record of the Year

Amy Winehouse has been in the news for both- good and bad - this year. The success of her album or her battle against drugs. She has a voice. Her songs reminded me of the mid 70s. 'Rehab' won this big prize and what a win this was. With great beats, wonderful lyrics and great chart success, this was a deserving win.

Best Rock Album

So, the Foo Fighters won for the third time. This band, led by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is a winner. He isn't Cobain, but he is Dave Grohl. Hoewever, this is not the best of the band. I felt they were too monotonous . Dave Grohl's echoes made me crave for silence, patience ad grace. I would've opted for Daughtry. This guy proved that you don't need to be an 'American Idol' winner to be a bestselling artist.

winner- 'Echoes,Silence, Patience and Grace' by Foo Fighters
should've won- 'Daughtry' by Daughtry

Best Pop Vocal Album

No trouble there. Amy Winehouse all the way

Best Rap Album

No trouble here too. Kanye West leeds the front

Best New Artist

Amy Winehouse had to win this one!!! But Daughtry wasn't nominated. That's a shame

Next Week, my take on the Oscars. Don't miss it!!!
